Every PlayStation State of Play September 2026 announcement, from Final Fantasy VII Revelation and Until Dawn 2 to all State of Play Japan reveals.

PlayStation's State of Play September 2026 was really two showcases: the standard global show followed immediately by State of Play Japan on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The pair began at 6am PT / 9am ET / 3pm CEST / 10pm JST on YouTube and Twitch, then ran through more than 30 games, one movie clip, new hardware, DLC, demos, and PlayStation Plus additions.

The headline was the first properly substantial look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation since Square Enix outlined the finale at FF14 Fan Fest Berlin. But the useful news was broader: Until Dawn 2 got a confirmed date, Maneater 2 and Rhapsody in Scarlet became real projects, and the Japan broadcast supplied the RPG-heavy second half.

bunpav's take: this was a strong information show, not a wall-to-wall blockbuster reveal show. The trick is separating ten minutes of systems and exploration from a 60-second reminder that a game still exists. That is what this recap does.

The official all-announcements post remains the best place to replay every individual trailer.

What did Final Fantasy VII Revelation's biggest reveal actually show?

Final Fantasy VII Revelation earned the closing slot and justified it with the day's clearest deep dive. This was not another logo or cinematic tease. Square Enix showed how the remake trilogy's final world, traversal, party play, and optional distractions connect ahead of the April 8, 2027 launch.

The Highwind is a controllable airship rather than decorative fast travel. Players can pilot it across the open world, use its interior as a mobile base, and skydive toward landmasses. The demonstration also moved through Rocket Town, Gongaga, and the Wutai capital, where grappling traversal and fast travel sit beside a wonderfully low-stakes side activity: photographing Wutai's cats.

The presentation ran through party members' unique abilities and personalities, then introduced FITS, short for Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear. Its Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner roles change moves, party function, and outfits. Cid appeared as a Knight and Vincent as a Summoner, which makes FITS look closer to a flexible class layer than a simple costume menu.

Chocobos now join combat as well as traversal. Piko grows alongside the party, while instant character switching lets the player change the field leader during exploration. Certain side quests can also be assigned to different party members, changing their perspective and potentially how scenes unfold. Queen's Blood returns with a Red XIII-centered storyline, too.

That is materially beyond the broad promises in our July Revelation Fan Fest report, which established the Highwind, Spring 2027 window, and multi-platform plan but did not have this full system tour. The exact April date replaces that older window; platform-specific technical performance is still unproven.

When is Until Dawn 2 coming out, and how do its choices work?

Until Dawn 2 launches January 28, 2027 on PS5, according to Firesprite's PlayStation.Blog post. Its playable cast is Dead True, a ghost-hunting online TV crew whose attempt to exploit the supernatural naturally becomes a survival problem.

The trailer begins with the crew filming at Blackwood Sanitorium, the site of the original tragedy, then shifts the threat to Akishima Island, an abandoned remote resort with older secrets. The branching choice-and-consequence structure returns: a character might follow a signal toward a missing friend or detour across an unstable bridge, while another decision asks whether a ritual sacrifice should go ahead. Those decisions can expose clues, split allies, or make somebody more vulnerable.

Creative director Stu Tilley summarizes the contract without pretending it is a new genre:

“Every choice you make is going to matter.”

The substantial part here was not merely the date. The trailer introduced the ensemble, two locations, and examples of decisions with plausible downstream costs. We still do not know the full branching count, average playtime, or how many endings exist, so any “save everyone” route circulating now is speculation.

Which release dates did PlayStation confirm?

The most useful calendar confirmations were Final Fantasy VII Revelation on April 8, 2027, Until Dawn 2 and Fate/Extra Record on January 28, 2027, and Metro 2039 on February 4, 2027. Gundam Rogue Orbit follows on March 5, while Daba and SlashZero retain broader Spring 2027 windows.

Closer releases include Marvel's Wolverine on September 15, the Rematch collaboration on September 24, Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition on October 1, Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown on October 15, Stupid Never Dies on October 21, Hunter's Moon on October 26, and Where the Seeds Fall on November 5. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World arrives December 3.

The Wolverine segment was a launch trailer, not a new reveal. Our existing Marvel's Wolverine September 15 guide covers its PS5 exclusivity, physical edition, price, and pre-order details. Likewise, the GTA VI beat was about two DualSense designs; it did not replace the November 19 game date or add story footage beyond the August GTA VI Extended Look.

Which State of Play announcements matter most to horror fans?

Until Dawn 2 was the obvious narrative-horror headliner, but it was not alone. Hunter's Moon is a first-person stealth-horror game set during one night in 17th-century England, following a woman accused during the witch hunts. Metro 2039 brought survival shooting back with a short PS5 Pro gameplay slice and a February date.

Zach Cregger's Resident Evil appearance needs a bright line around it: this was a film clip, not a new Resident Evil game. The adaptation follows medical courier Bryan into Raccoon City during an outbreak and premieres in theaters September 18. Calling it a game reveal would inflate the show.

The PlayStation Plus catalog also adds Dino Crisis 2 later this year, but that is a classic-library release rather than a remake, remaster, or sequel announcement. Horror fans got a useful cluster; only Until Dawn 2 received enough new narrative material to support a real breakdown.

What did State of Play Japan add for RPG and action fans?

The second broadcast shifted toward games from Japan and across Asia. The biggest new name was Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, while Fate/Extra Record was the rare cross-generation announcement: PS5 and PS4 both get the remake on January 28. Dragon Quest Monsters, Digimon, Sword Art Online, The Eminence in Shadow, and Gundam Rogue Orbit made the section densely franchise-driven.

The more interesting unknown quantities were CONQ, Where the Seeds Fall, and WPCA. Their first trailers established, respectively, large-scale faction warfare, a descent down a ruined World Tree, and supernatural containment work in Seoul. None showed enough to judge campaign depth, monetization, or final performance.

Konami used both broadcasts. Rhapsody in Scarlet paired magical-beast combat with jazz-era New York, then received a separate story trailer in the Japan show. Rev. Noir also returned twice, with a 2027 window and more of Asch and Fine's attempt to stop the catastrophe called lightfall. These were meaningful introductions, but neither has a firm release date.

Which trailers were substantial, and which were brief teases?

The clearest deep dives were Final Fantasy VII Revelation and Until Dawn 2. Gran Turismo 7: Spec IV also supplied a concrete update list: 12 cars, two tracks, Online Drift Trials, Shuffle Races, and a Family mode split between October and December. Ghost of Yotei similarly explained two distinct additions rather than merely playing a montage.

The middle tier included Maneater 2, Rhapsody in Scarlet, Hunter's Moon, and Uncanyon. Each reveal established a protagonist or playable fantasy, a setting, and a basic structure. There is enough to know what the pitch is, but not enough to judge mission variety or scope.

Treat Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance and Metro 2039 as comparatively thin show-level data points in a recap. They received new trailers, a 2027 window and February 4 date respectively, but this article will not turn a few confirmed images into imaginary system analysis. The official PlayStation posts offer some extra names and setup; hands-on evidence remains the standard that matters.

The same caution applies to Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, CONQ, and WPCA. Announcement trailers prove that projects exist. They do not prove launch quality, content volume, frame rate, or whether the final loop can sustain a full game.

What should you do after the September 3 State of Play?

  1. Watch the Revelation deep dive, not only its date trailer. The value is in seeing Highwind control, FITS switching, and party-led quests connect, not in another Sephiroth montage.
  2. Put confirmed dates on the calendar. January 28 has both Until Dawn 2 and Fate/Extra Record; February 2027 already includes Metro 2039 plus God of War Laufey on February 16.
  3. Try the demos before wishlisting blindly. Final Fantasy Resonance, SlashZero, and Stupid Never Dies all have playable samples or opening content available.
  4. Check your PlayStation Plus tier. Mycopunk is a Game Catalog addition, while the three older games require Premium Classics access. Those are different benefits.
  5. Wait for proof on the teases. A year label is not a release date, and a cinematic premise is not gameplay. Keep Maneater 2, Xenoverse 3, and WPCA in the “watch” column until longer demonstrations arrive.

Is the September 2026 State of Play worth catching up on?

Yes, but selectively. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the must-watch segment because it answers how airship exploration, party identity, class roles, and Wutai activities work. Until Dawn 2 is the other meaningful trailer because it binds its January 28 date to a playable cast and visible consequence system.

Everything else ranges from useful calendar housekeeping to attractive proof of concept. PlayStation's September 3, 2026 double State of Play succeeded as a broad catalog update, especially for PS5 RPG and horror players. It did not make every 2027 logo equally informative—and a comprehensive recap should not pretend otherwise.
