How do you play Smash Chess?

Checkmate the opposing king using standard chess rules. The animated pieces change the presentation, while castling, en passant, and promotion remain part of the game.

  1. Choose a friend for an online match or pick a bot difficulty for practice.
  2. Select a piece and then a highlighted destination square to make a move.
  3. Use an optional clock for pace, or choose no clock for a more relaxed game.

Make it a good team break.

Pair players with similar chess experience and use no clock for an introductory break. A larger group needs separate pairs and rooms. If everyone wants to play together, choose a party game instead.

Before you choose: The room supports two players. Clock settings are time per player, with optional increments; a five-minute setting is not a five-minute total event. Chess knowledge affects how welcoming the game feels.
