July is supposed to be the quiet month. July 21, 2026 did not get the memo.
Today's stack includes a best-selling PC survival game finally hitting consoles and Xbox Game Pass, Bungie's first Marathon PvE experiment, a make-or-break Phasmophobia patch after a rocky player-character update, a PlayStation Plus wave headlined by Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and a surprise Switch drop for a WarioWare-style party game. If you're building browser-game UI after reading our Jelly UI coverage, today's news is the other side of the coin: big-platform launches and live-service patches landing on the same calendar day.
TL;DR — what actually drops today

Tomorrow: Shift At Midnight — gas-station co-op horror on Steam, Xbox, and Game Pass (July 22).
The Planet Crafter — chill terraforming finally hits consoles
Miju Games ships The Planet Crafter on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S today, two years after its PC Early Access debut (March 2022) and full PC release (April 2024). If you missed the Steam era, the pitch is terraforming-as-survival: survive oxygen and temperature on a hostile world, build heat pumps and atmospheric machines, and watch glaciers melt into new valleys as life takes root.
What makes it unusual in the survival genre is what it doesn't have. Xbox Wire's July 20 developer piece is explicit:
"This isn't a game with jump scares and monsters. There's nothing to dread behind that boulder or in the depths of that cave."
Miju Games cites idle-game DNA — terraforming machines keep running while you explore shipwrecks and mix DNA to spawn creatures — and supports 1–8 player online co-op. Difficulty scales from chill to hardcore, with creative mode for builders who want zero pressure.
Game Pass is the headline for subscription players: The Planet Crafter joins Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and PC Game Pass on console, PC, and cloud today, per Xbox's July wave-1 announcement. Xbox Play Anywhere syncs progress and achievements between Series X|S and the Microsoft Store PC build.
Caveat: Console is day one; cross-play between PC Steam and console is not part of today's launch messaging — verify platform before you recruit friends.
Marathon update 1.1.5 — Vault Breaker opens Bungie's PvE door
Bungie's extraction shooter gets its mid-Season 2 patch today, and the tentpole is Vault Breaker — Marathon's first experimental PvE roguelite mode set in Cryo Archive.
From Bungie's July 16 preview:
"When Update 1.1.5 arrives on July 21, the Vault Breaker mode will open its doors and send Runners into Cryo Archive for Marathon's first experimental PvE mode. You can jump in straight away, whether you're running Solo, as a Duo, or with a full Trio — and that's true regardless of your Runner Level."
The loop: equip a free Vault Breaker Sponsored Kit, clear progressively harder vaults across multiple runs, earn Vault Data (Tier 1 from vaults and UESC Commander kills; Tier 2 from consecutive vault clears in one run), and spend it in a Vault Breaker Armory on kit upgrades or gear usable in standard Marathon activities. Loot found in-run stays behind on exfil except event currency — Bungie is deliberately avoiding a low-risk Cryo loot flood.
Vault Breaker runs July 21 through August 4. Full PvE arrives in Season 3, per Bungie.
What else is in 1.1.5?
| Change | Detail |
|---|---|
| Grenade infil cap | Max 2 combined from Bubble Shields, Chem/EMP/Flechette/Frag/Heat grenades at load-in — scavenged extras still allowed mid-run |
| Cradle Evolution | Maxed Cradles can reset for +1 max Energy and exclusive Runner shell cosmetics; 25% Cradle progress reduction reverted |
| Weapon tuning | WSTR Combat Shotgun buffed but range-limited; D54 Battle Pistol precision burst TTK increased |
| Implant icons | Redesigned for at-a-glance readability |
Why it matters: Marathon launched as a PvPvE extraction shooter while Bungie winds down Destiny 2 investment. Vault Breaker is a two-week experiment to test solo-friendly PvE appetite before Season 3 commits to a full mode — and the August 4 deadline means procrastinators lose access fast.
Phasmophobia — Willow Street rework and a honesty-first roadmap
Kinetic Games ships the 13 Willow Street rework today alongside the first of two 2026 quality-of-life updates — the studio's first major response after admitting the Player Character Update "did not meet the standards we set for ourselves."
The reworked Willow Street keeps the same overall layout as the fan-favorite original (mirroring the 6 Tanglewood Drive approach) but refreshes rooms, theming, environmental storytelling, and interactables. A Sun Seeker ID Card and Badge challenge rewards players who correctly identify 50 ghosts on the new map.
QoL highlights landing today
- PC equipment keybinds — slots 1, 2, 3, 4 (rebindable)
- Watch inspection keybind on all platforms
- Separate EMF Level 5 photo evidence option
- Faster gear swaps — journal open/close nearly instant; equipment can skip use animations
- Animation fixes — legs use proper walk cycles instead of procedural IK that wobbled held items
- New ghost type — identity still hidden at preview time
- Twitch Drops — Cool Cat ID Card and Badge (animated version on Partner channels only), July 21–28
The harder headline: 1.0 delayed to 2027
Kinetic Games moved Phasmophobia 1.0 from late 2026 to the second half of 2027, with Nintendo Switch 2 launching alongside 1.0. The roadmap now prioritizes QoL over new content: Unity 6 upgrade in October 2026, a second Player Character update in November, map rework for 42 Edgefield Road, and a new collectible system called Conduits replacing bones in 1.0.
For a genre that friendslop built on — Phasmophobia is still the proximity-chat horror granddaddy in our rankings — today's patch is less about novelty and more about trust repair. Kinetic Games said it plainly: "Our next update is the first step in a new direction."
Caveat: A second QoL wave lands in August 2026. If today's patch doesn't fix your specific gripe, check whether it's on the August list before you write the game off.
PlayStation Plus — Avatar lands globally; Sony keeps staggering US/UK/JP
Sony's July 15 PlayStation.Blog post confirmed a busy July 21 for PS Plus Extra and Premium outside Sony's staggered-market experiment.
Confirmed for July 21 (global or primary wave)
| Title | Tier | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora | Extra/Premium | PS5; Ubisoft open-world Na'vi action — global July 21 |
| Firefighting Simulator: Ignite | Extra/Premium | PS5; rescue sim with strong Steam reviews |
| Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy | Premium | PS2 classic remaster |
| Indigo Prophecy | Premium | PS2 classic remaster |
Sony is still staggering catalog drops in the US, UK, and Japan — titles like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind, Dying Light, Citizen Sleeper 2, and Snow Bros. Wonderland hit July 28 in those markets but July 21 elsewhere, per the official blog. Check your region's PS Plus app before assuming the full July lineup is live.
Context: This is the second month after Sony's PlayStation Plus price increase — Avatar is the subscription's big-ticket open-world play for July, and putting a $70 Ubisoft title in Extra is the kind of value subscribers expect after a hike.
SUPER 56 — surprise Switch party game
Not everything today is terraforming and ghost hunts. UK studio Onion Soup Interactive surprise-launched SUPER 56 on Nintendo Switch today — a WarioWare-style collection of 56 one-button minigames with daily challenges, Mod Stones that rewrite rules, and worldwide leaderboards.
It already has a Steam history with positive player feedback; today's Switch drop is a straight handheld party-game port with no announced pre-order campaign. If your group burned out on extraction shooters by noon, this is the palate cleanser.
Still fresh from July 20 (if you missed the weekend)
Two PC Early Access launches landed yesterday and remain worth watching:
- ZeroSpace — Starlance Studios' cinematic sci-fi RTS entered Steam Early Access July 20 at $35.99 (10% launch discount through August 3). Homeworld-adjacent pedigree via artist Aaron Kambeitz; Season Zero Galactic War creator event runs through August 1.
- EverRail — Aesir Interactive's frozen open-world survival train sim launched on Steam and Epic at $14.99 (10% off two weeks) with 1–4 player co-op and a permadeath-passenger loop.
Neither is a July 21 headline, but both are live if you're building a Steam wishlist after today's subscription drops.
What should you play or patch first today?
- Game Pass subscribers: Start The Planet Crafter co-op tonight — it's the lowest-friction pick and the clearest "finally on console" moment.
- Marathon curious but PvP-shy: Queue Vault Breaker solo before August 4 — the window is short and Bungie is explicitly gathering data for Season 3 PvE.
- Phasmophobia crews: Run the new Willow Street for the Sun Seeker challenge and test the 1–4 keybinds if you're on PC — report bugs; August QoL depends on feedback.
- PS Plus Extra members outside staggered markets: Download Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora today even if you only play five hours — it's the month's subscription value anchor.
- Horror fans planning the week: Shift At Midnight launches tomorrow, July 22 on Steam, Xbox, and Game Pass — today's Phasmophobia patch is the appetizer.
- Party-game households: Grab SUPER 56 on Switch for post-dinner chaos — one button, 56 micro-games, zero tutorial debt.
