Half-Life 3 HLX is back in the headlines because a Valve employee said the codename out loud. On October 22, 2026, Valve composer and audio artist Mike Morasky mentioned "HLX" during a GameSoundCon panel, and the person sitting next to him reacted. It is the first time anyone has caught a Valve employee using the name in public, and that is why PC Gamer, TheGamer, Polygon and Dexerto all ran it the same day.

It is also all it is: one word, one nervous laugh, no announcement. This post covers the exact quote, what HLX has meant since 2024, what the slip does and does not prove, and how to follow Half-Life news without getting played by fake leaks.

TL;DR: what happened with HLX?

QuestionDirect answer
What happened?Valve's Mike Morasky said "HLX" during a GameSoundCon audio panel on October 22, 2026.
What was the quote?"Deadlock has their own version of HDR. HLX has its own version, and so on and so forth."
Who reacted?Co-panelist David Feise whispered "nice work" (or "nice one"), then said "Good job, you only said HLX once."
Is Half-Life 3 confirmed? No. Valve has announced nothing.
Is there a release date? No. No trailer, Steam page or window exists.
What does it prove?Something called HLX exists inside Valve, and Morasky said it has its own version of the HDR audio system.
What does it not prove? That HLX is Half-Life 3, that it is near release, or that it is a mainline game.

What exactly did Valve's Mike Morasky say?

The moment comes from a GameSoundCon panel titled "Valve's Approach to an Open and Flexible Audio Engine", which can be watched in full on Vimeo. Asked about managing voice counts, essentially how many sounds can play at once, Morasky walked through the variables involved and then mentioned how Valve's HDR system helps optimize audio. According to PC Gamer's report, he said:

"Deadlock has their own version of HDR. HLX has its own version, and so on and so forth."

Co-panelist David Feise, sitting next to him, immediately turned and whispered "nice work," or possibly "nice one." Morasky laughed nervously and cut the answer short, saying the topic he had been discussing, Groups, "is its own one-hour talk, so come talk to us about that afterwards." At the end of the panel Feise leaned in and said, "Good job, you only said HLX once," PC Gamer says there is "no question that Morasky said HLX, and that Feise reacted."

The context is mundane, and that is what makes it interesting. Morasky was not teasing a game. He was listing Valve projects that use a particular audio tech, in the same breath as Deadlock, which is a real, playable Valve game. That reads like an internal project name used as casually as any other.

What is HLX, and where did the name come from?

HLX first appeared in early 2024 as a data string inside a Counter-Strike 2 update. It strongly resembled "HLVR", the internal codename for Half-Life: Alyx, which is why it got attention. Nothing shipped afterwards, and HLX was filed away with the other Half-Life 3 rumors, hoaxes and leaks. TheGamer adds that the codename has also been spotted in code for other Valve games such as Deadlock, though that is secondhand and we have not checked it.

There is a previous near-miss, too. PC Gamer says Morasky appeared "oh-so-close to saying HLX" in 2025 and caught himself midway, awkwardly pivoting to "Alyx." So this is the second time the same person has stumbled over the same word, which makes an innocent coincidence harder to argue and a long-running in-house nickname easier to believe.

Does this mean Half-Life 3 is real?

It means the name HLX is real inside Valve. Everything past that is inference, and PC Gamer is careful about it: "HLX does seem to be a thing, but exactly what type of thing is anyone's guess. Maybe he's tripping over Half-Life: Alyx, or referring to some bit of internal tech, or maybe the whole thing is all just a put-on."

Here is the honest ladder of evidence, from strongest to weakest:

  1. Strong: a Valve employee used "HLX" as a project name in a technical talk, and a colleague reacted as though it was not meant to be public.
  2. Medium: the name matches a 2024 data string tied to the Half-Life codename family.
  3. Weak: leaker claims that a Half-Life reveal was supposedly planned for a past Game Awards before being pulled. TheGamer relays this, but it comes from unnamed leakers, and we are not treating it as established.
  4. Zero evidence: any specific date, platform or price.

PC Gamer's Tyler Wilde said in 2025 that he thinks Valve is working on a new Half-Life game, though not necessarily Half-Life 3, and that "it's not unreasonable to believe that a new Half-Life game will be announced within the next year or so." A year on, nothing has been announced. That is a reminder of how long this particular rumor mill has run.

Why does the HDR detail matter?

It is a small but telling technical detail. Morasky described Valve's HDR system as part of how it optimizes audio when many sounds compete at once. Morasky's line says HLX has its own tuned version of that, as Deadlock does. It is still not proof of what kind of project HLX is.

Being named alongside Deadlock in that list could hint at a project with real audio work behind it, but that is our reading, not something Morasky or Valve said. Even a project at that stage can be a prototype that never ships, and Valve has a long history of cancelled work.

What should you do if you're hoping for Half-Life 3?

  1. Follow Valve's official channels only. The Steam store page, the Half-Life account on X and Valve's own blog are where an announcement would land. Wait for something there.
  2. Treat clips and screenshots with suspicion. Half-Life rumors are fertile ground for AI-generated fakes and fake "leak" files. Our fake GTA 6 leak scam warning applies word for word: never download a "leaked build".
  3. Do not pre-pay anything. There is no pre-order. Any site selling a Half-Life 3 key is a scam.
  4. Keep your wishlist realistic. If you want a Half-Life fix right now, Half-Life: Alyx exists and is the series' most recent official game.
  5. Check dates before you share. The Morasky clip is from October 22, 2026, and the earlier 2024 and 2025 events are separate. Mixing them is how stale "confirmation" posts go viral.

Why is this one different from past Half-Life rumors?

Most Half-Life 3 "leaks" are anonymous screenshots, vague data strings or insider claims with no accountability. This one has a named, verifiable Valve employee on video, in a context where he was not trying to tease. The reaction from a colleague is also on the recording. That is a notch more reliable than a Reddit post, though Valve is exactly the company that could make a slip a deliberate wink.

Still, it is a mention, not a statement. Valve has not commented that we could find, and we would not expect it to. The studio famously communicates by shipping, not by teasing.

What should you watch for next?

Three signals would move this from codename to news. First, any Valve post on Steam or the official Half-Life channels, because Valve announces on its own platforms. Second, a Steam database change, such as a new app entry or store assets, which trackers like SteamDB usually surface within hours. Third, a second public use of the name by a Valve employee in a talk or interview, which would make "accident" harder to claim. Until one of those lands, the responsible summary is short: the name exists, the project's nature is unknown, and the date is unannounced.

Player questions

Did Valve confirm Half-Life 3?

No. Valve has not announced a new Half-Life game. On October 22, 2026, Valve composer Mike Morasky said 'HLX' once during a GameSoundCon panel, which suggests an internal project with that name exists, but he did not say it is Half-Life 3 or give a date.

What is HLX?

HLX is a long-rumored internal codename. It first surfaced in early 2024 as a data string in a Counter-Strike 2 update that resembled 'HLVR', the codename for Half-Life: Alyx. Fans and press have linked it to a new Half-Life game, though no Valve statement says so.

What exactly did the Valve developer say?

Answering a question about voice counts, Morasky said: 'Deadlock has their own version of HDR. HLX has its own version, and so on and so forth.' A co-panelist then whispered 'nice work', and afterwards said 'Good job, you only said HLX once', per PC Gamer.

When will Half-Life 3 be announced or released?

Nobody outside Valve knows. There is no announcement, trailer, store page or release window. Treat any date you see online as rumor until Valve posts it on Steam or its official channels.

Could HLX be something other than Half-Life 3?

Yes. PC Gamer notes it could be a slip toward Half-Life: Alyx, a piece of internal tech, a joke, or a new Half-Life game. The slip proves the name exists inside Valve, not what it refers to.
